Summary balance sheet and sector data
For each company, we have selected to present six important balance sheet figures and three key financial ratios, with a trend graph for the four most recent years, and a comparison with the relevant sector. More specifically:
- Selected Financial eElements
Turnover (Net Sales): The total revenue generated by the company from its operation throughout the reference year, less returns and discounts. Together with Total Assets and the number of employees, these three factors determine the size of the company.
Net Profit/Loss for the Year before tax: The financial result (profit or loss) before tax of the company’s operation throughout the reference year. It indicates whether the year was profitable or loss-making and the size of the profit or loss.
Total Assets: The total assets and receivables of a company. This includes fixed assets and current assets (inventories plus receivables plus cash).
Net Working Capital (Current Assets – Current Liabilities): A measure of the company's liquidity and short-term financial health. It is calculated as the difference between current assets and short-term liabilities. A positive working capital indicates that the company can finance its current activities and invest in its growth.
Total net worth: The book value of the shareholders' equity. It is equal to the difference between: Total Assets (all assets and receivables owned by the company) minus Total Liabilities (everything the company owes). It indicates the book value that would result if all the company's assets were sold and all its liabilities to its creditors were paid off.
Long-term liabilities: Liabilities with a maturity of more than one year. They usually relate to the balance of loans taken out to purchase fixed assets (buildings, machinery, equipment, etc.).
- Selected Financial Ratios
Current Ratio or Working Capital Ratio: It measures the company's ability to pay its short-term liabilities from its current assets. It is calculated as the ratio of current assets to short-term liabilities. It should always be compared with the company’s sector average. Increased liquidity gives the company the ability, after covering its regular working capital needs, to have a safety margin for any unforeseen expenses and/or take advantage of opportunities, e.g. purchasing raw materials at a low price.
Debt to equity ratio: This is a financial leverage indicator. It is calculated as the ratio of Total Liabilities to Net Equity. The higher the ratio, the more heavily indebted the company is.
Net profit margin before tax - %: It measures the net income (before tax) generated by the company as a percentage of its sales. It is used to monitor the company's performance over time and compare it with the average margin of the sector to which the company belongs.
